ntnf000 Various Artists winter 2002-2003 (CD) Out of Print |
Texas is not just a state full of putrid politicians and businessmen, rather there are warm fields of creativity and open mindedness abound. The epicenter of most left leaning thought is tucked away in the hill country of Austin. A town overcast by the University's tower and the state capital is brought to life by artists as bright as the legendary moontowers. What began as a project to release records among friends in and around Texas has turned into an ambitious plot to turn heads from coast to coast. Mostly comprised of djs and sonic shapers integral to the lifeblood of the underground electronic scene, Notenuf Records was established in 2001 as an outlet to share the sights and sounds that make us wake up each morning.
'Winter 2002-03' features original work from established abstract experimenters The Buddy System (U-Cover), Inkblot (Audiodregs, Tomlab), and Jon Sheffield (Tomlab, Sparkling Beatnik) in addition to a host of unreleased artists. These up and comers reiterate our desire to stray from releasing one "style" or "genre." Bear witness: The compilation moves from the intricate classical hums of Atlanta's Sound Doesn't Travel Through Nothing to the electro-classical skills of t.Gureckis and the down-tempo piano and bass arrangement of Jacob Green. A Tiger Named Lovesick's edge rock blends well with the peaceful flow of Water Falls and the masterful shoegazer sound of New Mexico's Gingerbread Patriots. Forthcoming full length releases from The Buddy System, Sound Doesn't Travel Through Nothing and Jon Sheffield are in the works for 2003. Thanks for listening.
"...Out with the old, in with Notenuf Records, a startup Austin electronic label whose first release is the Winter 2002-03 compilation, culled by former KVRX all-star engineer Erik Wofford. Included are familiar Austin denizens the Buddy System and Jacob Green, whose sculptures are equal parts Boards of Canada and Eno ambient, and Inkblot, whose dub hypnotism is slightly more rhythm-oriented. Also on board are atmospheric Aus-rockers A Tiger Named Lovesick, Dead Whale Tide, and the Gingerbread Patriots, an enticing My Bloody Valentine sound-alike from New Mexico..."

"...As one of the first projects on the Notenuf record label, this sampler is a perfect introduction to a diverse and burgeoning population of artists in the middle half of the country..."
